India will be challenging for sailing medals on two fronts at the Paris 2024 Olympics with Nethra Kumanan scheduled to set sail in the women’s dinghy event while Vishnu Saravanan competes in men’s dinghy.

Sailing events at Paris 2024 will run from July 28 to August 8 in the Marseille Marina. However, August 9 has been marked as a reserve day to ensure all races get completed in case of delays.

Sailing at the Paris 2024 Olympics will see 330 sailors compete across 10 medal events.

Both Nethra and Vishnu will be making their second Olympic appearance. The two sailors, along with the men’s 49er pair of KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar, made up India’s four-member sailing contingent at Tokyo 2020.

Nethra had finished 35th in Tokyo while Vishnu came 20th in his event.

Since Tokyo, both Nethra and Vishnu have tasted success on the international stage and the duo will hope to make the experience count in Paris.

Vishnu won the bronze medal in his event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, last year and finished on the top podium at the EurILCA Europa Cup in Spain back in March this year.

Nethra, meanwhile, narrowly missed a medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, finishing fourth. She produced a clutch effort at the Last Chance Regatta in Hyeres earlier this year to secure a Paris 2024 Olympic quota.

Sailing made its Olympic debut at Paris 1900 but India’s first participation in the sport came in Munich 1972. No Indian sailor has ever finished in the top 15 in Olympic sailing.
